The History of South Texas Federal Credit Union

On December 8, 1952, thirty-four employees of McAllen High School joined to establish the McAllen Teachers Federal Credit Union. The credit union was located at the McAllen High School. All the staff were volunteers and did not receive a paycheck for work performed at the credit union. At the end of the first full year in operation, the credit union had $1,356.00 in total assets and 12 loans totaling over $1,250.00 in loans and 34 members. Fast forward to December 2025, the credit union now serves 6,199 members, with total assets reaching $ $67,618,465 and total loans amounting to $21,288,367. This impressive progress reflects not only significant gains in membership and lending but also a continued commitment to delivering quality member service.
